Two Rock Press is a small (read very small) publishing concern started originally in West Sonoma County. (As my dad said, “Okay, but don’t quit your day job.”) Since then we’ve relocated to the rolling hills of Leelanau County, Michigan. We started it to feature the writing of local authors and/or materials reflecting the every day and endangered agricultural lifestyle and perspective. Our lead author, A. V. Walters, is the primary contributor, but our courage is building and others have now stepped up to the plate and are exploring a more visible role. We welcome contributions and comments to our postings and publications. If you’d like to participate in our endeavor–we invite you to leave a comment and we’ll get back to you.
I loved the book The Emma Caites Way, and so far I love the Blog. A.V. Walters has such a wonderful ablity to bring people and situations to life, I can amost smell the chickens.

I’m not sure if smelling the chickens is a good thing. On this side of the farm we mostly smell the cows from the dairy next door. There is a continual debate here as to what’s worse–chickens or cows. And, thank you. It’s a pleasure to hear that someone has enjoyed The Emma Caites Way, I hope the characters resonate in a way that makes them real and memorable. Please bear with me as I learn the ins and outs of this blogging stuff. I’m in way over my head in technology. avwalters

My vote’s for the dairy barn. I’d far rather smell clean hay while listening to the girls chewing their cud than be exposed to the stink of ammonia and dusty chicken chit (although there are definitely ups and downs to be had on both sides of the discussion; )

Your writing is beginning to remind me of Annie Proulx in its sensitivity to the landscape around you and the beasts who share it. Hers are mostly about rivers and birds, but I think buckets and cows are equally worthy of observation.
Happy to have discovered the place to post a comment — I’m enjoying this blog very much!

I love this book. The story was told in such a wonderful way. And the mixture of art, antiques, food and Paris was simply marvelous!
My book club is going to discuss the book in a few weeks. Do you have any discussion questions to help us get started? Thanks.

Jeanne,
I haven’t given that any thought. I’m down with a bad cold just now, but I’ll take the opportunity to contemplate the issue and get back to you.

Jeanne,
I haven’t done this before, but I’d start along the lines of: Compare Fiona’s own shyness with Emma’s periods of depression and seclusion–is there a comparison to how the two of them coped? Was Emma’s treatment of Jordan (as a peer) in the forties a mature, unselfish act? While Emma demonstrated some fortitude facing some of the downturns in her life, one could also suggest that she was running from dealing with things as an adult. Discuss. Is rosemary actually an appropriate accompanying flavor for lamb? Would Emma’s story have been as satisfying had she not had the relationship with Willie? As long as she continued to grow and paint, does it matter?
Actually, once everyone’s read the book, I don’t think you’ll want for questions or issues.
A.V.

I hate to be a technical idiot, but what does “link back” mean?

Oh that. It just means that you “comment” on my award page and let me (and readers) know when you’re all done so we can check out the blogs you’ve nominated. Heehee you should have seen me the first time … 🙂

Okay, I’ll get to work on it. Did you download and/or read the book?

Yes, I’ve downloaded it. It’s nestled in tight, waiting for me. I worked so hard on yesterday’s post, I’m taking a “breather” begging in front of TV. 🙂 I’m looking forward to it, though!

We lived in Two Rock (CA). Two Rock had been a wonderful healing place for us. If anyone needs a place to recover from the bumps of life, I highly recommend a seven year stint as a tenant on a chicken farm. (with sheep and emus, too.) (Two Rock isn’t a real town anymore, just a farming area with a fire station, a church and lots of chickens and cows)

I’ve never heard of that before. Good to know.

Leelanau County?! That’s part of what my dad used to refer to as “God’s Country”.. We have a family cottage in Frankfort on Crystal Lake. And yes indeed, such beautiful country. So happy to have found this space, and I can’t wait to read through more of it!

Crystal Lake is beautiful, too. For some reason, I thought you hailed from Texas.

I reside in Pittsburgh, vacation every summer in Frankfort and travel often to Texas to see my daughter and my guy (a native Pittsburgher who went south for the oil business..) It keeps things interesting. 🙂

I just read ‘Be Prepared’. I wondered what had happened to you on Facebook but just assumed that you had somehow ‘dropped’ off my news feed.

Naw, I was trolled off of Facebook–probably because of my outspoken views. Then, in response to the trolls, FB demanded that I submit government-issued, picture ID. Not one for the big brother approach, I declined. I am back on FB, now fully punctuated (A.V. Walters) but I’m trying (not easy for me in these times) to be non-political. FB was always intended to be an author vehicle for me–but then I go run my mouth….
