Last week was the hottest week in recorded history. This is no Chinese hoax. We’ve known for decades. Still most are unwilling to make “lifestyle” choices needed to avoid climate catastrophe. What can I say?
A friend of mine said it all, when she received the invoice for mandatory flood insurance for her business. FEMA had changed it’s flood maps–acknowledging new realities. She was shocked.
“What did you think was going to happen?” I countered. “We’ve been talking about this for years. This is climate change in action.”
She looked as though I’d slapped her…”Not in my lifetime!”
Not quite climate denial, but a difference without a distinction.
I think there were a few ‘coldest in history’ this past winter. I simply mark it up to weather. NASA is warning about possible global cooling. We are technically and in the fullness of geologic time, in the middle of an ice age. 115 in California yesterday–you could have fooled me.

Though technically “in an ice age,” some geologists have advocated for a new era denomination…anthropocene.

Climate Change = weather extremes and we are definitely getting a LOT of those!

Heat domes, polar vortices, the wandering jet stream…winter and summer, we’re seeing extremes and wild fluctuations. If you just count is as weather, and don’t prepare, you could create the makings your own personal disaster. Even on a small scale, keep the gutters and spillways open, prune any tree limbs that could endanger your home, plant trees–that can withstand variations in weather, be prepared for power outages. It all adds up to being resilient. Last month, my old haunts in Northern Michigan were hit by outrageous flash flooding, seven inches of rain in about as many hours, triggering power outages that lasted days, roads washed out, some homes washed out. Granted, the locals rolled up their sleeves and mostly dug themselves and their neighbors out of danger. Still, wild storms and fierce winds are becoming part of the landscape of our times. It helps to be prepared.
